Today, I am meeting for the first time with my secret cabal. Can’t tell you who they are or where we meet. After all, it is a SECRET.CABAL.
We are discussing what might be construed as spam when notifying people about our new posts. Some people ascribe to the practice of using a “blast” method of placing posts on two or more services while others choose to manually notify one or more services of new posts.
How do YOU promote your posts? Do you blast out to Twitter, Facebook, and all theĀ more popular social media site using a plugin that handles all posts the same way. Or, on the other hand, are you the recipient of a landslide of information of dubious quality?
Just some food for thought.

We are not a real secret and we want to encourage to join us next month.
Etiquette is a tough issue and it was good to get feedback from others. Especially helpful was consensus that adjusting the message to the group you send “new post” notice helps overcome over sending.
Also appreciated Laura Faulkner’s idea of pulling a key point from the post to put in the subject line to give people a heads up on the post and save them time.
When I publish a new post, which I do about 4 times a week, I will post a link on Twitter in the morning then wait a bit and post a link on my Facebook fan page in the afternoon. The second link on my fan page is worded a little differently from the Twitter link. I really try to not inundate my friends/followers/fans with too many announcements about every post I publish–I think twice is enough.
I think that I am somewhat overwhelmed with the “landslide” so the discussion has been quite interesting.
Taking on new forms of social media, while necessary, could continue to be overwhelming unless you break it into smaller pieces.
I just do NOT have enough time in any week to learn everything.
Since I am new to blogging, I don’t yet have an answer for how I promote my blog. This “cabal” might just be the best way for me to learn about it.
